The Shot and Editing
On the Shot:
Explain the difference between small and large depths of field. Make up and describe two scenes in a movie and describe how both effects could be used to achieve the point of your scenes.
Depth of field is the measurements of the closest and farthest planes in front of the camera lens where everything will be in sharp focus. An example is how an object is 15 feet away from the camera lens, but the object will lose focus when its moved 3 feet away from the lens. A short-local-length lens has a greater depth of field than a long- focal-length lens. Short-local-length lens is also known as wide-angle lens. This depth of field can be used to focus on objects equal to or shorter than 10 feet depending on the type of lens. This is the same with a long-focal-length lens or telephoto lens.
In the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith they use different depth of fields. In the scene, Jane uses binoculars to see an incoming car. The shot is a point of view shot. In that scene they use long-focal-length lens to focus on the car far away. As the car gets closer, it re-focuses using the short-focal-length lens.
On Editing:
Imagine a continuously edited scene in a popular movie you have seen. Now imagine it re-edited discontinuously. Consider what graphic and rhythmic possibilities exist in the shots you're thinking of. How does it change the scene and the rest of the movie?
In the movie, The Dark Knight, the beginning scene uses continuous editing. It starts with a slow zoom in to a building window, then suddenly the shot is two joker masked men in that building.. The they use another zoom in but onto a joker mask held by a man a the street. The man on the street jumps in a car, then it jumps to the two men sliding out of the window. Then the shot is inside the car and a wide shot of the men sliding from the window. If this scene wasn’t edited people would be lost. They wouldn’t know who is doing what and why it’s happening. They use zooming to show another setting for the shot. If they didn’t jump from shot to shot, they would have a long boring shot of a building. Then inside the building, while men are sliding onto another roof, and finally a man waiting for a car, and a shot of what happens in the car. This would be a longer movie than it actually is if it was discontinuously edited. The scene wouldn’t show how the characters and setting are connected to each other. Since the scene is continuously edited, the scene is shorter and easier to understand what is happening. It also shows connections between each shot. The movie would also have long shots of the characters getting from one place to another. It would be a long and maybe boring movie because it will have unnecessary shots and scenes. The characters would be all over the place and it won’t jump from scene to scene to show how the scenes connect.

Favorite Movies & Their Genres
Three of my favorite movies are Monsters Inc., The Notebook, and A Walk To Remember. The Notebook and A Walk To Remember's genre is Drama/Romance. Monster Inc. is Comedy/ Family/Fantasy/Animation. These are some of my favorite movies because they fall into my favorite film genres. My favorite film genres are romance and comedy.
Monsters Inc. is directed by Pete Docter and released in the U.S. on November 2 2001. This movie was produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Theaters. and The main characters are James P. "Sulley" Sullivan voiced by John Goodman, Mike Wazowski voiced by Billy Crystal and Boo/Mary voiced by Mary Gibbs. Monsters Inc. is one of my favorite movies because it makes me laugh and cry. The film genre is comedy/animation/Family/Fantasy. It falls under comedy because the plot line has funny parts. The animated characters are involved in situations that you wouldn't find in the real world. This movie is also under Family/Fantasy because the script is rated G, which means it is family friendly and has no foul language, violence, or any other obscene materials. It's also based on fictional/ fantasy characters in a fictional situation. This movie makes me laugh because the people who play the voices of the characters are comedians. It also makes me cry because of the plot line. I really enjoyed this movie because I could relate to being a little kid and being afraid of monsters.
The Notebook is directed by Nick Cassavetes and released in the U.S. on June 25 2004.This film was produced by Toby Emmerich (executive producer), Lynn Harris (producer), Mark Johnson (producer), and Avram 'Butch' Kaplan (executive producer). The main characters are Ryan Gosling who plays Noah Calhoun, Tim Ivey who plays Rower
and Rachel McAdams who plays Allie Hamilton. This is one of my favorite movies because of it's film genre which is Romance/Drama. I like to watch dramatic films that ends up also being romantic. This film is a categorized as drama because the plot involves life situations and shows the characters at good, bad and in between times in there life. This film is also categorized as romance because the plot includes two people falling in love.
A Walk To Remember is directed by Adam Shankman and released on January 25 2002 in the U.S. This movie was produced by Denise DiNovi and Hunt Lowry for Warner Bros. Pictures to release. The main characters are Landon Carter played by Shane West and Jamie Sullivan played by Mandy Moore. This film also falls under the Genre Romance/Drama. This film is romantic because once again, two people end up falling in love. This film is categorized as drama because it to has real life situations and also includes real life issues, and problems.

My First Blog
Aloha, my name is Kaycee Magday. I am currently a junior at James Campbell High School. I was born in Hawaii and raised in the city Ewa Beach. I am hard working, reliable, and responsible. I don't like to see my grade point average lower than a 3.5 and I don't like getting grades lower than a 'B'. After high school, I plan to attend college to become a Pediatrician. I want to become a pediatrician because I want to become a doctor and I also enjoy working with little kids. I enjoy working with little kids because I like to hear that I am making an impact on someones life and helping them become a better person. When I was younger I had many mentors that made an impact on my life and help me grow into the person I am today. I hope to graduate with an IB diploma in the year 2010. I also hope to get scholarships that'll pay my way into college.
I enjoy watching many genres of film. I enjoy comedy, romance, horror, action, and dramatic films. My most favorite genre to watch is comedy because it's purpose is to make us audience laugh and I could always enjoy to laugh. My favorite film is Monsters Inc. directed by Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich, and David Silverman. I enjoy this film because it makes me laugh. The characters in this film are almost like real-life characters we know of. For example, there are characters drawn from a chameleon, Medusa, and slugs. Although I have grown out of watching cartoon shows and grown into watching more dramatic and reality shows, this film reminds me of my childhood memories. For example, when I was younger I would be afraid monsters because people would tell me it would eat me. Then I realized monsters are fictional characters in fairy tales and people scared me with monsters to scare me from doing bad things. Watching Monsters Inc. can always make me happy after a bad day.
